Importance of Wearing a Seat Belt

Most adults spend a lot of time behind the wheel whether it’s commuting to work or carpooling kids around. Many experienced drivers get comfortable and simply jump in the car and go without securing a seat belt, especially for short trips. Unfortunately, the others driving on the road can be distracted or negligent. Due to this, it is critical to understand the importance of wearing a seatbelt and doing so properly.

Seatbelt Safety Restraint Saves Lives

  • Passengers in a vehicle that don’t have on a seatbelt can easily be ejected in an accident. The impact of a crash can send a person through the windshield or any of the windows. If that isn’t bad enough, there is the risk of the vehicle landing on a person.
  • Statistics indicate that passengers that are riding in the back seat of an automobile wearing a safety belt properly are 44% more likely to survive in the event of a crash. This number goes up to 73% when it comes to those in the rear seat of a van or SUV. So, don’t be tempted to buckle up then slip the strap off of the shoulder, especially on long trips, as a way to get more comfortable.
  • Between 2011 and 2015, automobile accidents in Louisiana claimed the lives of 3,653 people. Louisiana has the seventh highest traffic fatality rate in the country.

Wear the Seat Belt Properly

  • Make sure your back is against the seatback and your hips are back
  • Pull the shoulder strap across your body
  • Make sure that the seatbelt webbing isn’t twisted
  • Find the buckle with the other hand and grasp the buckle to make sure the slotted top end is pointed upwards with the release button facing away from you
  • Insert the seatbelt until you hear a click
  • Tug on the belt to make sure it is secure
  • Make any needed adjustments to the shoulder strap before moving

The bottom line is, always buckle up in case you’re in an accident. Taking this extra step when getting on the road can mean the difference between life and death. Enforce this with all passengers who ride along as well.
